How Do You Build Team Trust?

Trust is not just a delicate, intangible element. It's a transformative force that, once in place, can create a solid foundation for teams and communities alike. It’s something I hold dear and feel deeply connected to, having worked with 27 groups over the past eight years. Creating environments where trust, respect, and safety thrive is second nature to me—perhaps because I spent so much of my childhood navigating the complexities of disharmony in my family of upbringing. This intuitive sense of knowing when trust is broken or needs repair is something I don't take lightly.

For many, though, trust doesn't come easily. Empaths, in particular, can feel it—the lack of trust in a room hits them the moment they walk in. Yet, they often struggle with how to shift that energy. That’s why I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned so others can build trust within their teams, both at work and at home.

One hard truth I’ve learned over time is that trust can't be asserted or presumed. It’s something that must be lived through shared experiences. This is why I love taking people into the wilderness—out of their comfort zones—and giving them the chance to lean on each other. It's a journey we all take together, and it accelerates trust-building in the most profound way.

So, how do you cultivate trust?

It begins with being willing to trust yourself.

It also requires vulnerability. When you share something personal, truthful and honest about your experiences, you open the door for others to do the same. This kind of authenticity can transform not only individual relationships but entire organizations. Are you willing to fully express and show up? It's not always natural or easy.

Here are a few more of my go-to’s to create trust:

  1. Being dependable also plays a crucial role. Following through on promises, listening with intention, and ensuring every team member feels heard and understood are all essential steps toward creating an environment where trust can flourish. Simple actions, like actively listening or making sure others feel safe in sharing their thoughts, build a sense of belonging and connectedness that strengthens the group.

  2. Agreements are another powerful tool for fostering trust. When people know what they can expect from each other, clarity and security follow. (And I’ve got a video that breaks this down even further—trust me, it’s worth watching! You can find this < 20-minute video Expectations vs. Agreements)

  3. Communicate your TRUTH. As I teach in Crucial Conversations, understanding the context of a conversation—especially when the stakes are high—is key to navigating trust and communication. Being aware of whether a conversation is pivotal or not can make all the difference in maintaining trust.

If you’re finding a lack of trust within your team or organization, know that it’s possible to turn that around. I'd love to support you in building the kind of trust that not only transforms relationships but strengthens the very core of your group’s success. Let’s connect if this resonates with you.

Together, we can create the harmony that allows trust to thrive.
