Growth Isn’t Always Glamorous

Sometimes it feels like your feet are stuck in cement. Like no matter how hard you try, you’re not going anywhere — in life, in work, in relationships. You look around and don’t see the results you’re hoping for — the promotion, the partner, the new house, the big break. But that doesn’t mean transformation isn’t happening.

Often, the most profound change is taking place inside us long before we see the external shift. And this kind of growth requires one thing above all:

Commitment.

I think back to the early days of my career in the mortgage industry. My first real job was with Transamerica Financial, dialing for dollars and collecting on note loans, using a little Rolodex box and handwritten index cards. Not exactly glamorous. Not even close to my dream — though to be honest, I didn’t even know what that dream was yet. I was 24, fresh off the oil patch crisis, just trying to pay rent.

But I stayed the course. I learned. I showed up. And job by job, I got closer to something meaningful. After processing loans and submitting files to underwriting, someone finally noticed how easily I connected with our referral partners. That trust I was building — that relational superpower — became the bridge to the next step in my career. One that would eventually span 27 years.

The same was true in my running life. I wasn’t a natural runner — I was a college swimmer! But I knew I had endurance. And after years of pounding trails and sweating through long runs, I eventually worked my way to 50-mile races and even earned sponsorship by a shoe company. That didn’t happen because I was the fastest. It happened because I was committed.

And that commitment extends to my spiritual path, too. I’ve meditated daily for over 20 years. Some mornings, it feels like a chore — like I’m not going anywhere. (Hint: that’s your ego talking.) But when I skip it, I notice immediately. The peace I usually carry? Gone. The calm and clarity I count on? Faded. That’s when I remember: my commitment is transforming me, whether I can feel it or not.

No one goes from answering phones at the front desk to becoming the CEO overnight. Just ask Mary Ann from Guild Mortgage — her story of rising through the ranks is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with time, tenacity, and trust.

So if you’re feeling stuck, I see you. I’ve been there. And here’s my invitation: take a moment to discern whether you’re on the wrong path… or just in a transformational season on the right one.

Because if it’s the latter — stay the course. Your commitment is already working on you.
