You are never too old to find your Souls calling….
The other day, while visiting my mom, she said something that completely shocked me. Let me give you the backstory to set the scene.
My mom, Bobi, moved into assisted living near me ten months ago. It was really rough at first. She wanted nothing to do with a place where "everyone else was sick." For the first few weeks, she walked the halls ranting and throwing F-bombs, demanding to leave. Thank goodness the staff was used to this behavior and just laughed it off. This is the mom I grew up with, so I wasn't surprised and hoped it would pass quickly. But it didn’t. Even a few weeks ago, when I visited, she talked about packing up and leaving (to where, I have no idea, but I played along with it) as soon as she could.
So when I saw her on Sunday, my jaw hit the ground when she proclaimed that she had a change of heart and was now sure this was the place she was supposed to be. I thought, HUH? What changed? A few days earlier, she had asked another resident what brought her to the assisted living place. The resident shared a heartbreaking story of a car accident where her husband passed away, she became paralyzed, and she lost everything she owned. Bobi couldn’t stop thinking about this poor woman’s situation and decided she needed to stay to support and comfort her. She found her calling at 89.
She realized her soul’s calling.
This really made me pause. In my experience, many people think their purpose is their work or their job. But what I’ve come to understand is that our calling is to be our true selves and share what is most meaningful to us—what lights us up, what we do naturally. For me, it’s being in nature and moving my body. I do it naturally every day, and when I don’t, I feel off. It doesn’t have to be a big thing; it can be the little things you already do! Here are a few:
Writing
Crafting
Playing music
Walking (me!)
Gardening
Caring for others—elderly parents, children, patients
Organizing
Navigating (another one of mine)
It's never too late, and it may be simple. It’s about doing and sharing what you love.
Here’s another clue:
The more we lean into our calling, the more alive we feel.
My mom might forget this new calling that’s bringing meaning to her life tomorrow, given that she has dementia at 89. But for that afternoon when she shared it, I could feel her renewed excitement.
What is your soul’s calling? Please message me, and if you’re unsure, definitely message me! I’m here and can help you find it because it’s already there deep inside, desiring to be expressed.
