The Twists and Turns of Life

Over Thanksgiving weekend, our refrigerator decided to go on strike.

Not the best timing (is there ever a good time?), but we pivoted. The appliance repair company was backed up, so we emptied the fridge and took advantage of the 18-degree Colorado weather by storing our food outside on the deck.

What surprised me was this:

I stayed completely calm.

Years ago, I would have spun into a mild meltdown—annoyed at the timing, frustrated by the food loss (farewell, wild-caught Alaskan crab), worried about replacing our 24-year-old built-in fridge. I would’ve huffed, puffed, maybe even stayed cranky all night—or all weekend.

But not this time.

The outer mess was still there. The hassle, the expense, the disruption… all very real.

But what was different was my inner response. It didn’t rattle me. I didn’t give away my peace. I simply dealt with it—grounded and clear.

That’s the fruit of practice:

Years of daily meditation.

Years of breathing through the chaos.

Years of learning to pause before reacting.

It doesn’t mean life is smooth—it means you are.

Lately, I’ve been focused on navigating deeper triggers, especially family dynamics. (If you missed last week’s Mindful Moment about this, read it here: A New Tool for Navigating Family Dynamics).

But this moment—this mundane inconvenience—was a quiet yet powerful testament that the inner work is at work. And that’s what I want you to hear:

Inner peace is not something we stumble into.

It’s something we build—one conscious breath at a time.

Self-awareness doesn’t just happen.

It requires honest reflection, consistency, and commitment. It’s why I guide my coaching clients through Friday Reflections, where they pause to examine their week—what worked, what triggered them, where they led with presence (and where they didn’t).

You can begin too.

Create a simple self-awareness practice. Put it in your calendar.

Stick with it. Let it anchor you through the inevitable twists and turns of life.

I promise you—it’s worth it!

With heart,

You don’t need to wait for life to get easier.

You can start showing up differently—right now…

with love,
